Who are bats?

Bats are not demons, angels or flying mice. They are mammals, like us and mice, and belong to the order Chiroptera. Bats are vital players in several ecosystem services, such as pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control, so they have huge ecological and economical importance. Currently, there are 174 bat species recorded in Brazil (Paglia et al. 2012) and over 1,200 in the world (N.B. Simmons, apud Kunz et al. 2011).
